Artist Statement
My artistic philosophy focuses on feminine gender norms and idealized beauty. This work involves themes of death, fear, the uncanny, and feminine bodies. These pieces aim to explore extreme beauty and female rage. This says a lot about the Gothic genre and the typical depictions of women from this period, which I learned from my English minor. Even though I am influenced by Gothic Literature and the horror genre, my work also takes inspiration from Alphonse Mucha and the Art Nouveau movement. Merging these interests allows me to create pieces that unnerve and inspire others to think critically about women’s places throughout history. Ideally, viewers would experience a mixture of feelings to demonstrate the complexities and dimensionality that real women have rather than the roles that are traditionally forced upon them.
